Can I eat watermelon with ulcerative colitis?

During a flare: CautionIn remission: Caution
Watermelon

Watermelon flesh is soft and low in insoluble fiber, which is helpful, but it's high enough in excess fructose that a large portion is considered high-FODMAP; big servings can pull water into the bowel and worsen bloating or loose stools in sensitive people.

During a flare

Small portions of seedless, deseeded watermelon are often tolerated as a soft flare food, but large servings may aggravate symptoms because of the fructose load.

In remission

Keeping portions moderate (roughly a cup or less) helps avoid the fructose threshold that can trigger gas or loose stools.

Ways to make it gentler

  • Remove all seeds
  • Stick to smaller portions

Safer swaps

cantaloupe
