Can I eat bagels with ulcerative colitis?

During a flare: Usually OKIn remission: Usually OK
Bagels

A plain bagel made from refined white flour follows the same low-fiber, low-residue logic as white bread. Whole-grain bagels, or ones topped with seeds, nuts, onion flakes, or raisins, add back the insoluble fiber and small hard particles that are more likely to irritate an inflamed colon.

During a flare

Plain, refined-flour bagels without seed or nut toppings are a commonly tolerated flare option.

In remission

Whole-grain or seeded bagels can be reintroduced as tolerance allows in remission.

Ways to make it gentler

  • Choose plain over everything-, seeded-, or whole-grain varieties during a flare
  • Toast for easier chewing

Safer swaps

white bread · white rice
